West Coast Basin Barrier Project Unit 13

  • Project Scope:
Project will construct 11 new injection wells and one observation well to replace and supplement existing WCBBP facilities. o 9 injection wells will be constructed to replace existing injection wells that are beyond their useful life and require immediate replacement. o 2 supplemental injection wells will be constructed at locations in-between existing injection wells along the WCBBP to provide increased protection against seawater intrusion.
  • Project Benefits:
Once the new injection wells are brought online, they will help prevent seawater intrusion by creating a freshwater pressure ridge in the underlying aquifers of the West Coast Basin located in the County of Los Angeles. The new observation well facility will provide Public Works with valuable groundwater elevation and chloride concentration data to enable better operation of the WCBBP.
  • Community Engagement:
Public Works presented the WCBBP Unit 13 to the Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach City Councils on June 18, 2019, and July 23, 2019, respectively. Both City Councils expressed their support for the project. In addition, Public Works presented the WCBBP Unit 13 to the Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach communities at two public meetings on October 28, 2019, and November 6, 2019, respectively. There were no critical concerns resulting from the community outreach meetings. Project will include informational signage and a plaque from the Association of Engineering Geologists commemorating the seawater barriers, which will educate the public about the WCBBP.
