Civic Center Central Plant Refurbish

  • Project Scope:
The Civic Center Central Heating and Refrigeration Plant supplies chilled water and steam for comfort heating and cooling to 14 buildings in the Civic Center area including the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and to the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The plant also generates electricity, which is no longer economically viable. The original 1950s boilers are past their useful life and cannot be made to comply with emissions regulations. Original wooden cooling tower, chillers, electrical distribution equipment and controls require significant upgrades. This project will be executed in several phases, starting with critical equipment requiring immediate replacement. The engineering challenge is to maintain plant operations while performing the phased critical equipment replacement.
