Mulberry Dr and Painter Av Intersection Improvements

  • Project Scope:
    The primary objective of this project is to improve traffic flow through the intersection as identified in the SR-91/I-605/I-405 Hot Spots Arterial Intersection Study completed in 2012.The project consists of widen Painter Avenue two feet on east side (south of Mulberry Avenue) and two feet on west side (north of Mulberry Avenue). Reconstruct pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalk, driveways, and curb ramps. Remove and or/modify raised median, continental crosswalks. - Add northbound and southbound right-turn pocket along Painter Avenue. - Add additional northbound left turn lane along Painter Avenue.
  • Project Benefits:
    The project seeks to increase the capacity of the intersection in advance of Caltrans' planned widening of the I-605 freeway. The project will improve intersection safety, signal timing, intersection pavement and provide safer pedestrian intersection crossing.
  • Community Engagement:
    A project information flyer and a pre-construction brochure will be provided just after the project has been awarded and a week prior to start of construction, respectively.
  • Project Location:
    Unincorporated County community of South Whittier and the City of Whittier.
  • Cost Estimate:
    - Total Project: $ 4,285,000 - Construction: $ 2,600,000 - Grant Funds: $ 4,410,000
  • Economic Impact:
    Project construction supports 31 direct and indirect jobs.
  • Schedule:
    - Final Plans – Spring 2026
    - Advertise for Construction Bids – Summer 2026
    - Start of Construction – Fall 2027
