On January 7, 2025, the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors awarded a new contract to provide trash, recycling, and organic waste collection services to all residents in the South and West Whittier/East La Mirada/Los Nietos/Sunshine Acres Residential Franchise area to Arakelian Enterprises, Inc., dba Athens Services (Athens Services). The new services are scheduled to begin on September 1, 2025, for a term of 7 years with two, 2-year renewal options, and month-to-month extensions up to 12 months, for a maximum potential contract term of 12 years.
Basic service includes weekly service of three 96-gallon carts: one black cart for household trash, one blue cart for recyclables, and one green cart for organic waste. Additional carts beyond the basic three 96-gallon carts are available for a fee.
Other services are also included, such as bulky item collection, excess trash collection, and excess green waste collection (upon 24-hour request), an annual clean-up event, mulch and compost giveaway events, holiday tree collection, and more. Please see the Subscription Form for more details.
Athens Services will start servicing your community on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. Your carts labeled with your existing waste hauler, Universal Waste Systems or Ware Disposal, will be replaced with Athens Services carts over a 3 to 4 week period starting September 2, 2025, through the end of September 2025. This cart exchange will take place on your regular service day by a company named Container Pros. Since the cart replacement for the area is anticipated to take 3 weeks, please continue to use your current Universal Waste Systems or Ware Disposal carts, which Athens Services will collect from, until they are replaced with Athens Services carts. Please remember to set all of your carts at the curb on your service day during the cart replacement period, and only take them back onto your property once they have been replaced or by 6 p.m. Your service day will remain the same under the new contract.
