Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
What examinations do I have to take for the job classification?

Answer:
The County of Los Angeles administers a variety of examinations, designated specifically for each job classification, which test the knowledge, ability and skill levels required for successful job performance. Your examination may include one or more of the following components:

Written Examination - Used to test candidates' technical and/or general knowledge. Written examinations typically include written exercise such as multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions.

Oral Examinations - Typically a panel of two subject-matter experts will ask each candidate a series of job-related questions. Candidates are rated based on the specific knowledge, ability, and skill levels demonstrated when answering the questions. This test is NOT a casual job interview.

Performance Examination - Raters observe and rate each candidate performing job-related activities. A performance examination may involve a physical agility test such as for Public Works Laborer, using construction equipment, or identifying tools.
