Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:
Why do I need a transportation permit and what is the fee for?

Answer:
Transportation permits are only required for "extralegal" loads as defined by the California Vehicle Code. These codes specify legal width, height, length and weight. Any load exceeding the legal limits specified by the vehicle code must obtain a transportation permit from each jurisdiction the load will be traveling through.
The maximum fees are also set by the vehicle code as they cannot exceed Caltrans permit fees. These fees pay for the costs of issuing the permit and maintaining the permitting system. The purpose of the permit is to restrict these "extralegal" loads to protect the infrastructure and public.
