 Long Beach, California, WTE Facility Closing; City Negotiating Digester Plan with Bioenergy Devco
The Covanta-run combustion facility in Long Beach, California, will stop receiving deliveries of municipal solid waste (MSW) on January 31, 2024. Covanta will wind down operations at the Southeast Resource Recovery Facility, decommission it and turn it over to the City of Long Beach for demolition. The City is planning to replace the waste-to- energy (WTE) facility with an organic waste receiving and processing facility. To that end, the City's Energy Resources Department has issued a notice of intent to contract with Bioenergy Devco to construct an anaerobic digestion facility.  Ag-Grid Energy's 5th Anaerobic Digester Project Begins Exporting Electricity
Ag-Grid Energy LLC announced the December 2023 start-up of its anaerobic digester at Lent Hill Dairy Farm in Cohocton, New York. The 1-megawatt (MW) facility is co-digesting cow manure from the dairy as well as up to 35,000 gallons per day of food waste collected from the surrounding area. The byproduct is biogas, which is converted into electricity that will be used by the Chobani yogurt company and Winsor Acres, another dairy farm, who have partnered to off-take the renewable energy via the grid.
