GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

EPA Announces Grant Opportunity for Food Waste Management Projects
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking applications for projects to help divert food waste from landfills by expanding anaerobic digester (AD) capacity in the United States. The EPA anticipates awarding up to $3 million in total AD funding, with individual grant awards potentially ranging from $50,000-$300,000. All applications must achieve one or more of the following objectives: support government programs that seek to use AD to increase their organic waste diversion rates, demonstrate approaches for increasing AD utilization that can be replicated by other communities, and establish new or expand existing partnerships that result in the development of AD capacity. Non-profit organizations as well as state, local, Tribal, interstate, and intrastate government agencies are eligible to apply. Applications are due on July 14, 2020. To read more, click here.

POLICY AND LEGISLATION

SoCalGas President Maryam Brown On Meeting States GHG Reduction Goals
Maryam Brown, president of the Southern California Gas Company, shared her insight into the impacts of COVID-19 on gas consumption as well as the companys progress on decarbonizing Californias energy supply. Brown discusses how a gas pipeline infrastructure network and innovations in hydrogen and biomethane technology can help the state achieve its climate goals faster, cleaner, and more cost effectively and create much needed post-COVID-19 green jobs. These innovations include projects that divert organic waste from dairies, landfills, agriculture, forests and wastewater plants. To read more, click here

With CTs Trash Future in Flux, Food-Waste Recycler Hopes for Bigger Role
To reduce the amount of garbage it burns, Connecticut has been investing in processing facilities that convert food and other organic waste into energy and compost. Currently, Connecticuts only anaerobic digester (AD) can process about 40,000 tons a year, which is short of the 300,000 tons of annual digester capacity needed meet the states goals. To encourage the development of ADs, Connecticut has placed ADs into its highest tier of renewable energy generation, allowing digester owners to receive energy credits. The states current digester sells the bulk of its biogas to help power local municipal buildings but is looking into refining it for injection into the natural gas pipeline. EPA Approves RFS Fuel Pathway For Biomass Gasification Project
The U.S. EPA approved a fuel pathway under the Renewable Fuel Standard for a biomass gasification plant under development in McFarland, California. The project, known as the San Joaquin Renewables plant, will produce 5 million standard cubic feet of compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) per day from orchard wood residue, almond and pistachio shells, and other un-digestible feedstocks. This will be the first biomass gasification to RNG project that qualifies for D3 RINs (the most valuable pathway). The EPAs analysis determined that fuel produced at the facility will achieve a 96 percent lifecycle greenhouse gas reduction when compared to 2005 diesel baseline emissions. Toronto Organics Processing Facility To Convert Food Waste To RNG
The City of Toronto is collaborating with Enbridge Gas Inc., to upgrade biogas infrastructure at its Dufferin Solid Waste Management Facility to refine the biogas produced from the Dufferin Organics Processing Facility (OPF) into renewable natural gas (RNG). The RNG will be injected into the natural gas distribution grid where it can be used to power waste collection trucks and heat city buildings and facilities. The Dufferin OPF manages approximately 55,000 tons, which can produce enough RNG to power the majority of Torontos waste collection fleet. To read more, click here.

Xebec Announces Its First Canadian Renewable Natural Gas Infrastructure Project
Xebec Adsorption Inc., and Bahler Biogas Inc. have signed an agreement to develop a facility in Qubec to process various organic wastes for the production of renewable natural gas (RNG) and biofertilizer. The facility will process over 45,000 metric tons of organic waste per year through an anaerobic digestion process and will produce 150,000 gigajoules of RNG annually. The plant is expected to be commissioned in early 2021. To read more, click here.

Ways2H Commercializes Hydrogen Fuel-From-Waste Technology
Engineering company Ways2H is commercializing a gasification technology developed by Japan Blue Energy Co. (JBEC) that can process waste and hard-to-recycle materials to extract hydrogen for transportation fuel or for electricity. The company is currently operating a large system in Joso, Japan that can handle 6 tons of solid waste per day and produce 300 kilograms of hydrogen. Ways2H is also in discussions with a health care facility in California to see about potentially converting medical waste onsite into hydrogen to partially power the facilitys operations. The California unit could handle 1 ton per day of dry waste and generate 960 kilowatt-hours over 24 hours. To read more, click here.
