In Chicago, a New Food Waste Solution Combines Renewable Energy and Urban Farming
A nonprofit organization, Green Era, has opened a 35,000-square-foot anaerobic digestion facility in Chicago to process local food waste into renewable natural gas. Chicago is estimated to generate approximately 451,000 tons of food waste per year. The facility will receive feedstock from local municipal agencies, restaurants, food companies, food manufacturers, and residents. The anaerobic digester will process food scraps, inedible food waste that cannot be recovered, and spoiled packaged foods to produce biogas and compost for farms. For more information, click here.
