Will the Hydrogen Revolution Start in a Garbage Dump?

Long Beach startup, Ways2H, announced that it is building a commercial waste-to-hydrogen facility in central California that is to begin supplying hydrogen to customers by early 2021. If successful, it will be the first waste-to-hydrogen plant of its kind in the U.S.A. The Department of Energy is also investing in waste-to-hydrogen technologies and recently awarded $1 million to researchers at Oregon State University to develop a reactor that produces hydrogen from food scraps and wood chips. Group Says It Will Launch Worlds Largest Green Hydrogen Project

SGH2 is working with the City of Lancaster, California to build one of the largest hydrogen production plants that is set to be in full operation by early 2023. The plant will apply plasma heating technology to recycled mixed paper waste and produce up to 11,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day. The City of Lancaster is planning to process nearly 42,000 tons of waste annually and is expected to save up to $75 per ton in landfill costs. The city is already working to sell the hydrogen to refueling stations. To read more, click here.

Leading Women Break Ground on Connecticuts First Renewable Electricity Dairy Digester

In Connecticut, the owner of Fort Hill Farms and CEO of Ag-Grid Energy have teamed up to build a biogas system that will recycle food waste and dairy manure into renewable energy and soil products. The system is expected to produce electricity using a 550 kilowatt engine, supplying local cities with 24/7, renewable electricity to be used in their municipal buildings. To read more, click here.

Standard Hydrogen Offers Alternative Transportation Hydrogen Fuel to Existing Hydrogen Products

Standard Hydrogen has developed a thermal technology to produce hydrogen transportation fuel from municipal solid waste (MSW). MSW, including food, tires, plastics, paper, and mattresses, are processed and converted to hydrogen sulfide which is split into hydrogen and sulfur. This process can produce hydrogen at a low enough cost to be competitive with diesel and gasoline and the sulfur can be used in fertilizers or pharmaceuticals. Synthetic Oils from Municipal Waste Offers Hope of Alternative Jet Fuels

ASTM International has approved the use of a synthetic oil derived from municipal solid waste (MSW) for the production of jet fuel at petroleum refineries. For companies like Fulcrum BioEnergy of Pleasanton, California, ASTM approval is a critical step in bringing a new fuel product to market. Fulcrum is currently constructing its Sierra BioFuels Plant outside of Reno, Nevada that will process 175,000 tons of MSW annually to create 11 million gallons of synthetic oil for use in transportation fuels. Island-Based Impact Bioenergy Fuels Up Car with Food Waste

Impact Bioenergy, a manufacturer of systems that convert food waste into usable energy and fertilizer test drove a hybrid sedan with fuel derived from food waste. The sedan was able to drive about half a mile per pound of food waste. The company would also like to provide the biofuel as a propane substitute for use in homes that may be off the gas grid.
