EPA Announces Anaerobic Digestion Grant Opportunity for Food Waste Management Projects
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking applications on Grants.gov for projects from states, non-profit organizations, and local, Tribal, interstate, and intrastate government agencies and instrumentalities to divert food waste from landfills by expanding anaerobic digester (AD) capacity in the United States.
EPA anticipates awarding up to $2 million in total AD funding. Individual projects could be in the range of $50,000-$200,000 for the funding period of two years.
Applications are due by October 7, 2021. Additional information is available on Grants.gov, under Funding Opportunity Announcement EPA-OLEM-ORCR-21-02.
For more information on this opportunity or to register for the informational webinar (August 2, 2021, from 3:00-4:00 pm Eastern Time) visit the EPA Anaerobic Digestion Funding Opportunity website.
Fulcrum BioEnergy Completes Construction of Sierra BioFuels Plant
Fulcrum BioEnergy Inc. has completed construction on the world's first commercial-scale plant converting household waste into transportation fuels. The Sierra BioFuels Plant located east of Reno, Nevada, will convert 175,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) into 11 million gallons of syncrude annually, which will then be upgraded to transportation fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel, diesel and gasoline. Solid Waste Recycling Facility Goes Online in Santa Barbara, California
A new solid waste recycling operation has begun operations at the Tajiguas Landfill in Santa Barbara, California. The material recovery facility (MRF), called the ReSource Center, will separate the organic waste from municipal solid waste (MSW) and send the material to an anerobic digestion facility to be converted into renewable energy and compost. The energy generated by the facility will be used to power 2,000 homes and the compost will be used as fertilizer for local farms. For more information, click here.

CHAR Announces California Green Hydrogen Project with Hitachi Zosen Inova
CHAR Technologies Ltd. announced a test project with Hitachi Zosen Inova to develop a pyrolysis to hydrogen system at their existing San Luis Obispo anaerobic digestion facility in California. CHAR's pyrolysis system will convert 18,000 tons of solid anaerobic digestate into 1,320 tons of hydrogen and 2,800 tons of biocarbon per year. For more information, click here.
Another Canadian Utility to Develop RNG Supply
Alberta gas and power utility ATCO Energy Solutions will develop the province's first renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility near the city of Vegreville. The facility will convert municipal organic waste and agricultural waste into about 230,000 gigajoules a year of RNG, which will then be injected into ATCO's natural gas grid. The RNG produced will meet the annual energy demand for 2,500 homes. For more information, click here.
Creating Renewable Natural Gas from Green Bin Waste
The City of Toronto uses an anaerobic digester to process green bin organics at the Dufferin Solid Waste Management Facility. The City has installed new equipment to enable the facility to create renewable natural gas (RNG) from the raw biogas and inject it into the natural gas (NG) grid for City use. The facility has the capacity to process 55,000 tons of organic waste each year. For more information, click here.
