Analysis of the Progress Toward the SB 1383 Organic Waste Reduction Goals

Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) requires CalRecycle to conduct an analysis of the waste sector, state government, and local governments'' progress toward meeting the 2020 and 2025 organic waste disposal reduction goals. In consultation with the California Air Resources Board, CalRecycle released a report that analyzes organics recycling infrastructure development, commitment of state funding and local service rate increases, progress in reducing regulatory barriers to siting organics recycling facilities, policies that will facilitate permitting of organics recycling facilities, and markets for compost, biomethane, and other products. Chesapeake Utilities Corp. Partners with BioDevCo to Inject RNG into Pipeline

Bioenergy DevCo is set to deliver up to 300,000 million British thermal units of renewable natural gas annually to Chesapeake Utilities Corp. (CUC), sourced from organic waste to be processed at an anaerobic digestion plant in Delaware. The plant is proposed to begin injecting the carbon-negative renewable natural gas into the utilitys pipeline by early 2021. CUC, who has typically bought fracked gas, has developed an interest in finding solutions to agricultural waste and plans to do projects in multiple states. To read more, click here.

Union County Freeholders OK Plan for Organic Waste Recycling Plant at Tremley Point

Union County in New Jersey approved a plan that would allow Linden Renewable Energy LLC to start constructing a $220 million organic waste recycling facility plant in Linden by early 2021. The proposed facility will turn organic waste into natural gas and liquid fertilizer. Feedstock will include unused foods from supermarkets and restaurants. The natural gas produced will be delivered into the Texas Eastern Transmission Company interstate pipeline. To read more, click here.

Tons Of Waste Being Kept Out Of Landfill Thanks To MORC

The Muscatine Organic Recycling Center (MORC) is reducing organic waste being sent to Iowa landfills. The facility is processing 25 to 30 tons of food waste each day from grocery stores, cafeterias, restaurants, industries, and residents. The facilitys depackaging machine has allowed it to accept food waste in containers. The facility aims to feed the organic waste it receives to anaerobic digesters and convert that waste into renewable natural gas that can be used by compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. California Company Wants Your Plastic Waste

Brightmark Energy is looking to collect more than 1.2 million tons of difficult-to-recycle plastic waste annually for conversion into sustainable fuels. The companys technology converts plastic into ultra-low sulfur diesel, naphtha, and wax, and also creates building blocks for new plastic. The company has a new plastics-to-fuel operation in northeast Indiana and is currently looking into locations for new recycling facilities with a goal to have two sites ready by 2021. EPA Biogas Toolkit

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a toolkit that serves as a centralized knowledge hub for biogas projects, including anaerobic digestion facilities. It can be used for planning and implementing biogas projects and quantifying their economic and environmental impacts. The toolkit includes information compiled from resources that address biogas projects involving agriculture, solid waste, and wastewater. Click here to access the toolkit.

Chicago Anaerobic Digester, Urban Farm Project Secures Final Funding For $32M Campus

A nine-acre brownfield site in Chicago will now become the site of an urban farm and an anaerobic digester (AD). The AD facility is expected to process 85,000 tons of organic waste, including food waste, each year. The facility will produce compost for the farm and renewable natural gas that will be sold through an agreement with British Petroleum (BP). To read more, click here.

Study Finds Wastewater Treatment Plants Could Profit By Processing Food Waste While Reducing Greenhouse Gases

A report issued by the California Environmental Protection Agency shows that at least half of Californias landfill-bound food waste could be co-digested at the states wastewater treatment plants and serve as an innovative power source. The report also found that the net benefits to the state could be up to $255 million each year and that maximizing co-digestion capacity could reduce statewide greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 2.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
