EDITORIAL BY LOS ANGELES COUNTY INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT TASK FORCE: Addressing the Plastic Waste Crisis in California with Senate Bill 54
Senate Bill 54 (SB 54), also known as the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act, by Senator Allen was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom on June 30, 2022. Among other provisions, SB 54 would require producers of single-use packaging and plastic single-use food service ware to source reduce the material and/or ensure the material is recyclable or compostable. EPA Awards $200K to Support Anaerobic Digestion Tech in Northeast
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a $200,000 grant to the Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA) to support anaerobic digestion (AD) technology in 11 states in the Northeast, New England, and the Mid-Atlantic. The projects funded by the EPA grant will develop solutions to regulatory and other barriers to AD projects while incorporating principles of environmental justice and community engagement. The grant to NEWMOA is one of 11 EPA is awarding this year to divert food waste from landfills by expanding AD capacity nationwide. For more information, click here.
Hennepin County Plans to Build Brooklyn Park Facility to Convert Food Waste Into Fuel
Hennepin County in Minnesota wants to build a processing facility in Brooklyn Park that would convert meal scraps and other organic materials into renewable natural gas, compost, and fertilizer. The project is part of the county's new climate action plan and its broader goal of being waste-free by 2050. The $45 million facility would be the first in the Midwest to use a digester for food waste. For more information, click here.
