Alhambra, CA - In order to raise environmental awareness about the amount of electrical energy we consume in one hour, the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works (Public Works) will turn off all lights in its headquarters building on October 20, 2007, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Public Works Headquarters is a 12-story building which is the tallest building in the San Gabriel Valley. The call for “Lights Out Los Angeles” came after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently passed a motion requesting that all non-essential lighting in government buildings, public landmarks, and residential and commercial sectors in the County be turned off. The motion also urges County residents to replace at least one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb. According to the lightsoutla.org website, turning lights off in Los Angeles for one hour could save as much as 15 percent of the energy consumed on an average Saturday night. The ongoing benefits of installing compact fluorescent lights in your house are even greater. The website also states that reducing carbon emissions into our air, and preserving the natural resources used to produce this energy, will set a positive precedent for the rest of the nation, and result in ongoing reduced costs for the city, taxpayers, and businesses.
