Introduction

The Transportation Core Service Area is responsible for investing in the County's streets, highways, and airports through regular maintenance and improvement projects. We are committed to implementing practices and promoting polices that enhance mobility and quality of life and are consistent with the principles of sustainability.

As an agency that manages the largest and most diverse roadway network in the State, Public Works has taken the lead to provide greener, cost effective roads by implementing a Sustainable Pavement Treatment Program for the rehabilitation, construction, and maintenance of its roadway network.

In 2012, the County adopted a Bicycle Master Plan to encourage the use of bicycling as a general means of transportation; enhance the safety of bicycle users; and provide guidelines for the development, expansion, and implementation of the County’s bikeway system. The Plan proposes the implementation of over 830 miles of new bikeways through 2032.

In addition, Public Works has developed the Green Infrastructure Guidelines to provide guidance on how Low Impact Development and other sustainable practices can be integrated into the planning and design of transportation projects to minimize the economic, social, and environmental impacts of development.
