Marvin Braude Bike Trail and Santa Monica Canyon Channel Restoration
Overview
The Marvin Braude Bike Trail and Santa Monica Canyon Channel Restoration Project is a Los Angeles County Public Works initiative to repair storm damage and enhance safety along a heavily used segment of the coastal trail at Will Rogers State Beach. The project will restore trail infrastructure and reinforce channel outlets damaged by extreme weather and sea-level impacts.
Project Summary
Project Timeline: August – December 2025
Construction Hours: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Project Cost: $4.2 million (restoration only)
Funding: Eligible for FEMA funding due to federal disaster declaration
Status: In progress
Description:
The Marvin Braude Bike Trail experienced a critical washout near the Santa Monica Canyon Channel outlet in February 2024, following severe king tides and winter storms. While the adjacent bridge remains structurally sound, the trail section to the north required emergency closure and full reconstruction.
This six-month construction project restores the damaged bike trail, reinforces the channel outlet, and ensures long-term safety for cyclists and pedestrians. The project follows recent enhancements from 2023, which added a new .6-mile two-way bike lane and pedestrian path between Will Rogers State Beach and Santa Monica.
