The Normandie Avenue Median Beautification Project

Background

As part of the Bridge Point South Bay II project approval process, $300,000 was awarded to provide for a community improvement fund for the unincorporated community of West Carson.

In November 2023, residents of unincorporated West Carson submitted proposals for potential improvement projects, leading to the identification of 9 projects. In February 2024, the Community Advisory Panel (CAP) comprised of 5 volunteers from West Carson assessed the pros and cons of each proposal and voted to recommend the Normandie Avenue Median Beautification project to the Directors of Regional Planning, Public Works, and any other responsible agencies with jurisdiction over the specific improvements. This was based on which project had the most positive impact for the greater community of West Carson.

Project Scope

This project will remove and dispose the existing Asphalt Concrete (AC) along the median and replace it with stamped concrete. About 15 trees with wells will be planted throughout the median. Two Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant bus benches will be installed near 212th Street and Levinson Street. Existing cross gutter slots will be removed at the intersection of Normandie Avenue at Levinson Street.

Project Benefits/Purpose

This Median Beautification Project will create an aesthetically pleasing, safe, and functional space that benefits both the environment and the people living in or traveling through the area. Beautifying the median can make the road look more appealing. Adding greenery, such as trees, can improve air quality and provide shade.
