Proposed New Terminal at Compton/Woodley Airport

Building for the Present and Future Needs of General Aviation and the Local Community

Public Works is seeking your valuable input now.

Your participation is vital to the ultimate design and function of a proposed new airport terminal building at Compton/Woodley Airport.

Airport Overview

Compton/Woodley Airport was established as an airport in 1924 and later purchased by Los Angeles County in 1966. The Airport has a very rich and diverse history and is the first County-owned and operated airport to reach 100 years of continuous service to aviation and the local community!

There are nearly 200 aircraft based at Compton/Woodley Airport which each year accommodates over 60,000 takeoffs and landings, serving a diverse range of general aviation activities (all civil aviation excluding airlines). Such activities include, but are not limited to, personal and business travel, flight training, firefighting, disaster relief, search and rescue, law enforcement operations, medical transportation, banner towing, and news, weather, and traffic reporting.

The airport also hosts numerous community events throughout each year and is home to various aviation businesses and non-profit aviation organizations including the Tuskegee Aeronautical Museum, Fly Compton Foundation, Experimental Aviation Association and its Young Eagles Program, and the California Black Aviation Association.

Overall, the airport plays a vital role in the nation’s integrated system of airports and is an asset to the local communities, serving the diverse constituents of the City of Compton and the broader County of Los Angeles.

What is a General Aviation Airport Terminal Building?

The terminal building is essentially the front door for a general aviation airport. It serves as the gateway between the street side and the airport’s air side of the airport. Depending on demand, the facility also typically houses airport administration offices, pilot and public lounge/lobby area, flight planning area, conference/meeting rooms, public restrooms, public recreation areas, and dining facilities among other amenities.

Project Overview

The current 3,300 square feet modular terminal building is over 30 years old and does not adequately meet general aviation and local communities’ existing or future needs.

Los Angeles County Public Works proposes to design and build a new terminal building, including a community space at Compton/Woodley Airport to:

  1. Enhance airport access;
  2. Modernize infrastructure to meet existing and future needs for general aviation and the local communities; and
  3. Create a safe and welcoming space for community gatherings, meetings, workshops, programs, events, activities, and training opportunities.

Next Steps

Prior to finalizing plans for a new airport terminal building at Compton/Woodley Airport, Public Works, in partnership with Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s office, is seeking additional input from the local businesses and residents surrounding the airport.

Your comments, suggestions, and recommendations are greatly appreciated and will be beneficial to the ultimate design and function of the proposed new airport terminal building.

You are encouraged to participate in these planning efforts by submitting a survey and visiting the airport terminal building planning team booth at the upcoming Air Fair event.
