The County airports actively engage local youth through age-appropriate organizations and activities.

Youth Organizations and Opportunities

Overview

The County airports are home to various youth-oriented aviation organizations, programs, and events dedicated to providing local youth with opportunities including, among others, free aircraft orientation flights, training and education for military and aerospace careers, scholarships, low-cost flight training, community service, field trips, and even the chance to participate in building an aircraft from scratch! 

Following are some of the youth-oriented organizations and programs located at the County airports: 

Aero Association of Caltech (San Gabriel Valley Airport)

Air Explorer Program Kittyhawk Squadron 3 (Whiteman Airport)

Provides low-cost flight training for youth to explore careers in aviation, including learn-to-fly experiences, field trips, and scholarships.

Antelope Valley College Aviation Program (General William J. Fox Airfield)

Airframe, Manufacturing Technology Program curriculum addressing airframe manufacturing, aircraft fabrication (structures and composites), and electronics.

Brackett Airmen Association (Brackett Field Airport)

Meets monthly at the Airport Terminal Building and hosts monthly aircraft display day events at the airport.

California Black Aviation Association (Compton/Woodley Airport)

Civil Air Patrol (San Gabriel Valley, Brackett Field, and Whiteman Airports)

Civilian auxiliary unit of the U.S. Air Force, its cadet program trains young men and women in volunteering, teamwork, moral leadership, aerospace education, technical skills to support emergency services, and military history and customs.

Experimental Aircraft Association (Compton/Woodley, Whiteman Airports)

Aviation enthusiasts, pilots, and aircraft builders who meet to share information and ideas, talk about all things that fly, build, restore, and fly aircraft, and fundraise to provide flight scholarships.

Fly Compton Foundation (Compton/Woodley Airport)

Aviation professionals focused on creating awareness, providing scholarships, and supporting underprivileged communities to inspire and uplift the next generation of pilots and aviation professionals.

Fox Field Airport Association (General William J. Fox Airfield)

Meets at the Airport Terminal Building and hosts regular aircraft display day events at the airport.

Friends of Whiteman Airport (Whiteman Airport)

Glendale Community College Aviation Program (Whiteman Airport)

Offers pilot training, flight attendant, and travel career educational programs through affordable tuition.

Mission Flight (San Gabriel Valley Airport)

Connects isolated communities with hope, help, and healing. SOAR program gives youth with special needs the opportunity to fly and celebrate as “certified co-pilots.”

Mt. San Antonio College Aviation Program (Brackett Field Airport)

The largest two-year aviation program in California and is nationally recognized as one of the best to help students develop top-notch skills needed for successful careers in aeronautics.

Ninety-Nines (San Gabriel Valley, Brackett Field, Whiteman, and General William J. Fox Airports)

Women pilots association active in mentoring and supporting student pilots or aviatrixes pursuing advanced training and fundraising to support fight scholarships.

San Gabriel Valley Airport Association (San Gabriel Valley Airport)

Meets at the Airport Terminal Building and hosts regular aircraft display days and other events.

Whiteman Airport Association (Whiteman Airport)

Meets at the Airport Terminal Building and hosts regular aircraft display days and other events.


Events

The County’s five general aviation airports facilitate and host numerous events and activities throughout the year. See the Events and Activities webpage and the Calendar of Events for more information.


Airport Tours and School Presentations

Airport tours and off-airport visits are provided to local schools, youth organizations—such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and civic groups that want to learn more about the airports specifically, and aviation in general.
